LONG BEACH ISLAND: EMPIRE WIND TO POWER ONE MILLION HOMES
Through Statoil’s commercial lease for renewable energy development in an area off the New York coast south of Long Beach Island and east of the Rockaways, Empire Wind has the potential to generate capacity over 1 gigawatt. This is enough to power about a million homes.
The commercial lease was signed in March 2017, following the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) successful auction in December 2016.
The State of New York has committed to a Clean Energy Standard, requiring 50 percent of the state’s electricity to come from renewable energy sources by 2030. Empire Wind can play a key role in helping New York achieve that benchmark, and providing needed energy to the New York metropolitan region.
Empire Wind is part of Statoil’s commitment to leadership in renewable energy development in the US and around the world. Statoil has a track record of success in the two largest offshore wind markets, the UK and Germany, and the company’s European offshore wind farms, either in operation or in construction, will provide over 1 million households with renewable energy.
