LEAKING NORTH SLOPE WELL UNDER CONTROL
Well 3, at the Drill Site 2 gravel pad at Flow Station 1, about 5 miles from Deadhorse Airport, out of control since the 14 April was successfully killed the 16 April by pumping down heavy brine. The oil leak was stopped before crude contaminated tundra beyond the well, but the natural gas leak continued through the weekend. The BP well drilled in the 1970s has been producing about 500 barrels of crude oil daily.
Specialists from the well-control company Boots and Coots helped to develop plans for killing the well. The cause of the release remains unknown, as does the total amount of oil spilled by the leak. (Source: Alaska Dispatch)
