ONYX POWER AWARDED CONTRACT FOR TERMINATION OF COAL-FIRED ZOLLING PLANT IN GERMANY
Onyx Power has been awarded the tender in the 6th auction procedure for the reduction of coal-fired power generation by the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) for the Zolling power plant. Subject to the plant being transferred to the grid reserve, coal-fired power generation at the site will cease on 21.02.2025.
Currently, the Zolling coal-fired power plant provides around 470 MW of electricity for the market and 150 MW for the local district heating supply. When the coal-fired unit is decommissioned as part of the coal phase-out process, the decoupling of heat will cease. From this point on, heat for the Freising area could be provided by a new, hydrogen-capable thermal power plant, among other things. Work is well advanced so that the supply of heat would be secured even after the end of coal-fired power generation.
Zolling power station is a one-unit coal-fired power plant with a total capacity of 474 MW located in Bavaria. The plant was completed in 1986, and is owned by Engie. The first 40-MW unit went online in 1958. Three more sets followed by 1966. The old units were all demolished in 1989.
