VENTA MAERSK FIRST CONTAINER SHIP ON THE NORTHERN SEA ROUTE
A.P. Moeller-Maersk has announced it will launch its first container ship through the Northern Sea Route (NSR), the Venta Maersk, as part of its exploration into moving trade through the arctic.
The medium-sized container ship, one of a new class of container ships that are built with stronger hulls, designed specifically for harsh winter conditions, will be accompanied by an icebreaker. With a length of 200 meters and a breadth of 35.2 meters the ship is able to carry up to 3,600 twenty-foot equivalent containers (TEU). The shallow draft wide-beam vessel was built at the Zhoushan Shipyard in China. The convoy will leave Vladivostok in eastern Russia this week and is due to arrive in St Petersburg by the end of September.
This project will be the first ever transfer of a cargo vessel along the Northern Sea Route. Based on the results of this passage, the safety of navigation and the availability of cargo base on the NSR will be assessed. (Source: Maersk – Image: Convoy on the NSR/SCF)
